Your EBS isn't the problem. Where it runs, and what it talks to, might be.
Across the Oracle E-Business Suite customers we work with, one conversation keeps coming back. Leadership wants "modernization." The board is asking about AI. Finance wants lower run costs. And the team that keeps EBS running is quietly wondering whether all of this means ripping out a system that still closes the books, ships the orders and pays the suppliers every single day.
Our view, shaped by many years of EBS programs across industries, is simple: modernizing Oracle EBS is rarely about replacing it. It is about changing where it runs, how it connects, and how people get answers out of it. Done in that order, each step pays for the next.
This post walks through the three layers we see delivering the most value right now: moving EBS onto Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), connecting it through Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), and putting AI on top of the data it already holds.
Layer 1: Move Oracle EBS to OCI
For most EBS estates, the infrastructure is the oldest and most expensive part of the picture: hardware refresh cycles, data center contracts, storage that was sized for a peak that happens twice a year, and a DBA team spending its time on patching rather than on the business.
OCI changes that equation in three ways.
Cost and operational efficiency.
Capital spend on hardware and data centers becomes pay-as-you-go consumption. Elastic scaling and automation raise utilization, managed services take routine work off the team, and Oracle-specific licensing and migration programs can make the move more economical than a generic lift-and-shift to another cloud. The practical outcomes we see clients value most are environments provisioned in minutes rather than weeks, clearer cost visibility and forecasting, and an IT team that gets time back.
Performance, scale and reliability
Compute, storage and networking scale on demand, which matters for month-end close, seasonal order peaks and the analytics and AI workloads that tend to follow a migration. Built-in redundancy, disaster recovery options and a global region footprint support business continuity and low-latency access for distributed teams.
Security, compliance and agility
Identity, encryption and threat protection are integrated rather than bolted on. Industry-certified environments help with compliance readiness, and governance and policy can be standardized across workloads instead of managed server by server.
Just as important is what sits next to EBS once it is on OCI: Oracle Database and open-source databases, containers and functions, integration, analytics, a data lake, and machine learning and AI services, all under a common security, observability and governance layer. That proximity is what makes the next two layers straightforward rather than a series of separate projects.
Our advice
Treat the OCI move as the platform decision it is, not a hosting change. Plan the target landing zone with integration and AI in mind from day one, so you are not re-architecting networking and security six months later.
Layer 2: Integrate EBS with Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC)
Very few EBS environments live alone anymore. They exchange data with Fusion Cloud modules, NetSuite, Salesforce, banks, tax engines, 3PLs, marketplaces and EDI partners. In many estates that web of connections grew one custom interface at a time, and it has become the most fragile and least visible part of the landscape.
Oracle Integration Cloud on OCI gives that web a single home. It does three jobs:
- Connect and automate. Integrate Oracle SaaS, on-premises and third-party applications using real-time, event-driven or bulk patterns, and automate the business processes that run across them.
- Extend and innovate. Orchestrate workflows across applications and bring modern web and mobile apps, machine learning and IoT into the process.
- Extract and analyze. Consolidate SaaS and on-premises data into a central lakehouse and prepare it for reporting, analytics and machine learning, giving a unified view of enterprise data.
With more than a hundred prebuilt adapters covering Oracle applications (including E-Business Suite, ERP, HCM and EPM Cloud, NetSuite and JD Edwards), other enterprise platforms such as SAP, Workday and Salesforce, and the major cloud services across Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, much of the plumbing that used to be hand-coded is now configuration.
Where OIC and EBS earn their keep
The use cases we implement most often fall into five groups:
|
Area |
What gets connected |
What changes for the business |
|
Cloud and SaaS integration |
Fusion Cloud, NetSuite, Salesforce and other SaaS |
Customers, suppliers, items and pricing stay in sync; orders, invoices and receipts flow in real time |
|
Financial integration |
Banks, payment providers, tax platforms |
Bank statements, payments, receipts and journals are automated, with fewer manual touches and better accuracy |
|
Warehouse and supply chain |
WMS, 3PL and logistics applications |
Inventory, shipment, receipt and fulfillment transactions automated, with near real-time supply chain visibility |
|
E-commerce and EDI |
Commerce platforms, marketplaces, trading partners |
Orders, acknowledgements, ASNs and invoices handled across API, EDI and file-based patterns |
|
API enablement and process automation |
Modern web and mobile apps |
EBS data and processes exposed through secure APIs; approvals, notifications and exceptions orchestrated across systems |
The benefits compound. Prebuilt adapters and templates shorten delivery. Centralized dashboards show the status of every transaction and every error in one place, which is often the first time an operations team has had that view. Security, authentication, auditing and policy are managed centrally. And because the platform is cloud-native, it scales with transaction volume and adapts as new applications arrive, typically at a lower total cost than maintaining a traditional middleware stack plus a pile of custom code.
Our advice
Start with an integration inventory. In almost every assessment we run, we find interfaces nobody owns, duplicates doing the same job, and a few critical flows with no monitoring at all. Rationalizing those before moving them to OIC is where much of the value is.
Layer 3: Bring AI to Oracle EBS with OCI Generative AI
This is where the conversation usually gets exciting, and where we encourage clients to be the most practical. The fastest AI wins in an EBS estate do not come from new data. They come from making existing data easier to reach and existing processes smarter.
Ask EBS: natural language questions, answered from EBS
A good example is natural language query over EBS. A user types a question in plain English, such as "What are all the open orders for customer Acme Inc.?" or "Has invoice 1234 been paid?", and gets an accurate answer straight from EBS, with no SQL, no hunting through forms and no waiting for a report to be built.
Under the hood, it combines OCI Generative AI, Oracle Select AI on Autonomous Database, and an APEX front end:
- The user asks a question in an APEX interface, authenticated through EBS single sign-on.
- The request goes to Autonomous Database on OCI, where Select AI sends the question to a large language model along with schema metadata only. No EBS business data is sent to the model.
- The model returns a SQL query.
- That query runs against EBS through a read-only schema of secured views, protected by Virtual Private Database (VPD) policies and role-based access control.
- The results come back to the user, who sees only what their EBS responsibilities allow.
That design point deserves emphasis: the AI generates the question, but EBS security still governs the answer. It works with EBS 12.2.7 and later, Database 19c or 23ai, and current APEX releases, and EBS itself can stay on-premises or run on OCI.
The everyday questions it handles cut across modules: open POs by supplier, PO aging and spend in Procurement; on-hand quantity and item availability in Inventory; outstanding balances and aging by customer or supplier in Receivables and Payables; and account balances and period trends in the General Ledger. Users can then filter and refine ("backordered only", "urgent only"), sort by age or value, drill from order header to line to shipment, chart the results, export to Excel or a BI tool, and save useful questions for reuse. For those who want to see how an answer was produced, a toggle shows the business logic and the generated SQL.
Beyond questions: AI across the business
Natural language query is a starting point. OCI's AI services span generative AI, AI agents, document understanding, vision, speech, language, predictive analytics and vector search, organized in three layers: enterprise AI models for managed inference, enterprise AI agents for orchestration and runtime, and enterprise AI governance for controls, security and visibility. That structure matters to enterprises because it lets teams build multi-agent workflows on their own data while keeping identity, auditability and observability in place.
The use cases we see gaining traction map directly onto EBS functional areas:
- Financials: invoice processing and matching, payment scheduling, customer risk scoring, automated cash application, automated journal entries, close acceleration, and expense classification.
- Supply chain: automated RFP scoring, supplier performance monitoring, labor forecasting and task optimization in the warehouse, defect detection and scheduling in manufacturing, and duty and tax optimization in global trade.
- Customer experience: sales order creation, dynamic pricing, cross-sell and up-sell, predictive maintenance and parts replacement, self-service chatbots, and contract renewal prediction.
- Human capital: candidate matching, retention and burnout signals, manager coaching, talent pipeline forecasting, succession planning and career path mapping.
Our advice
Pick two or three use cases where the data is already clean and the process owner is eager, prove the value, and let that build the case for the rest. AI programs that start with a forty-item wish list rarely ship.
An EBS modernization roadmap: a sequence, not a big bang
The reason these three layers work well together is that each one lowers the cost and risk of the next. OCI gives you an elastic, secure foundation with integration and AI services next door. OIC turns a tangle of point-to-point interfaces into a governed, observable integration layer, and it is also the path for getting EBS data into the lakehouse that AI depends on. AI then sits on top, working with data that is now accessible, current and properly secured.
None of this requires abandoning an EBS investment that still runs the business well. It extends that investment's life and value, and it keeps the door open to Fusion or other future moves on your own timeline rather than under pressure.
Frequently asked questions about EBS on OCI
No. Moving EBS to OCI, connecting it through OIC and adding AI on top extends the life and value of your current investment. It also keeps a later move to Fusion on your own timeline.
Lower capital spend through pay-as-you-go consumption, environments provisioned in minutes rather than weeks, on-demand scale, built-in disaster recovery options, and integrated security and compliance.
OIC includes a prebuilt E-Business Suite adapter and more than a hundred others. It connects EBS to SaaS applications, banks, warehouses, e-commerce platforms and EDI partners, with central monitoring of every transaction.
Yes. In natural language query, the language model sees only schema metadata, never EBS business data. Queries run through read-only secured views with VPD policies, so users see only what their EBS responsibilities allow.
No. Natural language query works with EBS on-premises or on OCI, on EBS 12.2.7 and later with Database 19c or 23ai.
