Improve Performance and Future Proof your investment with JD Edwards 64-Bit Processing

Reacting quickly to new business trends, regulatory requirements, and technology trends makes an organization more competitive. And, staying on the most current release of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne helps enable current and future innovation.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne has supported vendor 64-bit hardware, operating systems, databases, and Java for many years. Additionally, many JD Edwards components are 64-bit enabled including HTML, AIS, BSSV, and RTE servers as well as Orchestrator. With the application release of EnterpriseOne version 9.2, JD Edwards users also have the option to move completely from 32-bit to 64-bit processing for the Enterprise Server and development client.

Since its release, our team has fielded a lot of questions about the benefits of moving a JD Edwards system from 32-bit to 64-bit processing. Many of our clients would like to make the move to enable 64-bit now so they’re ready to adopt future technology and ensure their technology environment is future-proof. We recently completed our own transition to 64-bit processing here at WhiteLight Group. In this article, we’ll share the top reasons why businesses benefit from a move to 64-bit as well as some conversion best practices.

Why make the move to 64-Bit Computing?

A 64-bit processor can handle more data at once than a 32-bit processor. It has the capacity to store more computational values and memory addresses so you can do more multitasking and enjoy better overall performance. A 64-bit processor can access more than four billion times the physical memory of a 32-bit processor so many applications that demand high performance are designed to take advantage of that increase in available memory.

Businesses using JD Edwards EnterpriseOne version 9.2 also have an excellent tool in their toolbox: JD Edwards Orchestrator, an integration and workflow engine that automates business processes, data collection, and analysis and integrates with third-party systems. JD Edwards Orchestrator solves many of the challenges businesses face when seeking to automate including cost, lack of skills, and more. Using the Orchestrator studio, a business analyst can create, test, and deploy orchestrations or use the Process Recorder functionality to capture the key processes needed for automation within JD Edwards.

JD Edwards EnterpriseOne customers are working with bigger datasets than ever before and relying on the system to power automation—which pushes the limits of a 32-bit infrastructure. With 64-bit processing, your business gains:

  • Performance improvements of about 10% for heavy interactive and batch processing.
  • Agility to adopt future technology innovations and enhancements that future-proof your JD Edwards investment.
  • Relevancy as third-party component vendors releases only 64-bit components like database drivers.
  • Technical uplift managed with the JD Edwards Tools Foundation with no impact on your business processes or business data.

Oracle highly recommends that businesses make plans to transition to 64-bit processing as soon as possible. It helps you stay compatible with new releases of 64-bit applications and products, maintain interoperability, and avoid the risk of facing hardware and software obsolescence. By migrating your entire environment to 64-bit, you’ll also save time and reduce dependence on hardware resources by eliminating the need to manage both 32-bit and 64-bit artifacts and multiple package builds.

Technical details and conversion best practices

Oracle conducted several tests to compare 32-bit versus 64-bit processing. Overall, the 64-bit environment showed:

  • Improvement in total average interactive time
  • Improvement in UBE runtime
  • Decrease in Enterprise Server CPU usage
  • Decrease in average C Business Function (BSFN) response time

It’s worth repeating that 64-bit enablement has no impact on JD Edwards's business processes or business data. Customers have the choice and control to determine when to enable their 64-bit environment. However, Oracle does recommend upgrading to Tools Release 9.2.3, 32-bit first, before upgrading to 64-bit. The automatic process will convert all out-of-the-box business functions. To convert custom business functions, businesses will have to run on-demand UBE.

64-bit enablement is only available for Application Release 9.2 and for the following platforms:

Operating System                  Database

Oracle Linux                            Oracle Database

Microsoft Windows                Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database

IBM i on Power                       IBM DB2 for i
